Random Acts of Kindness

I was listening to the radio during this morning's commute and one of the hosts mentioned that he'd stopped for coffee on the way to the station and decided to ask his cab driver what he would like. He said the cab driver was so surprised and grateful. He encouraged people to do things like that on a whim.

A few years ago, I did things like that in response to a movement to pay it forward. There were stories of people feeding expired parking meters for others or paying for the coffee of the person behind them in line at the coffee shop. Doing good to feel good. For whatever reason (finances, cynicism, shyness), I stopped. Then the other day, I saw a blog entry about doing random acts of kindness each day for a month. I tucked the thought away in my mind until I heard it again this morning.

Now I feel compelled and really, how can I resist? There's joy in giving--both for you and for the receiver. Now, I just have to get creative. I don't buy coffee, most NYC parking meters spit out a printout that you have to leave on your dashboard and I might go broke if we add another car to our already out of control gas budget (did I mention that I commute 100 miles a day??) Stay tuned for ideas or feel free to offer up some suggestions.

Cheers and Happy Friday!
