Hairspiration

I mentioned in the last Weekly Weigh In that I’ve been organizing all of my photos. Besides noticing my fluctuating weight, I’ve also noticed the variety of hairstyles I’ve rocked over the past few years.* That is until 2013. I started letting my hair grow mid-2013 because it hadn’t been long in a while. I had images of long flowing waves for Fall and so it went. Now, it’s on the edge of too long and I don’t know what to do with it on the weekdays--especially when the weather is bad. As a result, my hair lives in Ponytail Land at the corner of Low Pony and Boring. On the weekends, it’s either a mass of air dried curls or a top knot. I love my curls but I. Am. Bored.

In college, I must have changed my hair color 5 times. It’s been blonde, various shades of brown and an unnatural shade of red made popular by Janet Jackson and again later by Rihanna (highlights only).

I’ve done highlights, full dye, short and long bangs, layers...you name it. The length has varied from just at my chin to way down my back. I say all this to let you know I am pretty adventurous when it comes to my hair. Or at least I was until I went all corporate.** Now, I’m in a rut.

Case in point: Today, one of my colleagues asked if I’d waved at her as I was pulling out of the parking garage last night. I confirmed it was me. She said “I thought so. I saw the ponytail and thought it must be you.” Must. Be. You. Really? I'm the ponytail girl? I'm already the cable knit sweater and slacks girl and the young girl. Must I be the boring ponytail girl too?*** Time for a change people.

I’ve been keeping a hairspiration file (here) for a while but have been hesitant to pull the trigger. I was actually waiting to celebrate reaching my goal weight with a makeover focused mostly on my hair. (I’m a firm believer in shedding the past with a haircut.) But, I don’t think I’m going to wait that long.  Add "haircut" to the list of things to do to get unstuck. (By the way, are we at the point where we could start a drinking game based on how many times I say unstuck on this blog???) I think I'm going in this direction but we'll see.

What do you do to get out of a hair rut? Happy Wednesday!

* I feel like I might find every life lesson I need in the process of organizing my photos! This is what? The fourth?

** I've dyed my hair since starting my career so I'm not saying hair dye is taboo. There are just some acceptable colors and applications (subtle highlights or full color). I stopped dyeing my hair when I was struggling with lupus. My hair thinned and became really weak. When it grew back, I was afraid to damage it with color. Now, my hair is now completely healthy, strong and untreated. I do want to color it but I'm looking into how to minimize the impact first...or maybe natural coloring solutions?

*** Every ponytail is not boring. There are plenty of chic, date night worthy ways to rock a pony (here, here and here). Wearing it the same way everyday (with that "I hit snooze 3 times this morning" flair) is where it becomes a problem.

By the way, sorry for all the asterisks (footnotes)!
